Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screenplay "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death.
He told a reporter at the time he wasn't upset at having lost, but he was "tempted to give lessons in the Chaplin walk, out of pity as well as in the desire to see the thing done correctly."
